Emerging Leaders Certificate Program - Saturday, March 2, 2013
The Emerging Leaders Leadership Development program will equip early career managers to be able to make decisions with a sharper outlook on the corporate strategy. Business leaders with five years or less experience and UT graduate students are encouraged to participate. Sessions are held three times a year and always on Saturday.
Session 1: Behavioral Economics for Business Leaders
Faculty: Brian T. Kench, Ph.D.
8 a.m. – 9 a.m. Breakfast • 9 a.m. – 12 noon Workshop
In this workshop, we will distinguish between two types of creatures: humans and Econs. Humans are the people we interact with every day, and Econs are strange creatures only found in economics textbooks that are unemotional, really smart, and never have self-control problems. Behavioral economists have discovered that if you want to design environments that work, you want to design them for humans, not Econs. If a business leader understands behavioral economics, he/she will not be able to change his/her employees into Econs, but he/she will be able to mitigate some of the biases through clever choice architecture. Indeed, we will demonstrate how to nudge any feature of a business and/or economic environment to attract people's attention and alter their behavior in a way that does not compel. Workshop examples will include retirement investment decisions and sustainability programs among many others.
Session 2: Effective Strategies in the New Normal
Faculty: Susan D. Steiner, Ph.D.
12 noon – 1 p.m. Lunch • 1 p.m. – 4 p.m. Workshop
Strategies are based on projections and planning. What happens when the past is no longer prologue? What happens when the world around you is continually changing? What happens when those changes have never been experienced before? One conclusion could be that organizations must always be aware of their environment and adjust accordingly. However, great organizations are not just responsive to their environments. They have inspiring visions and clear goals. So how does an organization balance its need to retain its identity and focus with its need to change based on marketplace shifts and disruptions?
